Subject: Statement regarding SAGE (Submitting and Grading Electronically)Dear Colleagues
On behalf of the Director of Student and Academic Services I have been asked to communicate to you the current and future position in relation to the submission and grading of assignments.You will be aware that it is now some time since the University first introduced the SAGE project (Submitting and Grading Electronically). Initially, the project was piloted in parts of the University before being rolled out to all areas in terms of electronic submission last year. The University is now implementing the final part of the project and you are advised that with effect from the academic year commencing 23 September 2013 ALL assignments will be required to be submitted and graded electronically, unless they meet the stringent criteria for exemption. Apart from final copy Dissertations there is no automatic rollover of any exemption granted for the current year.
If you have an item of assessment for the year 2013/2014 academic year that you believe cannot be submitted and/or graded electronically you might wish to contact LTSupport@northampton.ac.uk for guidance on what is possible prior to making a formal request for exemption. Fresh applications for exemption should be made by completing the attached spreadsheet giving detailed reasons as to why electronic submission and/or grading is not an option. All applications must be submitted to Debbie.Drage@northampton.ac.uk and received by 15 September 2013.
Once this information is received and an exemption granted it is not expected that you will need to apply again in relation to that item next year.
Training needs are no longer grounds for exemption and staff are able to email LearnTech@northampton.ac.uk for training – this support has now been in place for some considerable time and if colleagues have not availed themselves of it previously they are actively encouraged to do so now.
Colleagues are also reminded that the following activities are wholly inappropriate:
- Accepting paper copies of work direct from students as an alternative to electronic submission
- Seeking/Accepting e-mail submissions from students as an alternative to using Turnitin
- Asking students to submit paper copies to Student Administration teams
- Asking students to submit paper copies to Student Assignment Office (except where an exemption has been specifically granted)
Colleagues may also be interested to know that a SAGE steering group has been established to assist in exploring some issues surrounding the project and any matters for consideration should be addressed to the relevant School Learning Technologist or notified to Rob Howe who facilitates the group.
Colleagues are reminded of the need to ensure that NILE sites reflect the up to date position in relation to SAGE.
